Employees

Some employees who incur expenses whilst performing the duties of their employment and are not fully reimbursed by their employer may have been overpaying tax for years.

The most common example is where you travel to client’s, or a temporary workplace and your employer pays you less than HM Revenue & Customs authorised rates, currently 45 pence per mile up to 10,000 and 25 pence over and above 10,000.

Certain employees, such as nurses, or tradesmen may also be able to claim a ‘flat rate expense’ for cleaning their uniforms or working clothes.

Mechanic’s who use their own tools may also be able to claim to deduct the cost of these against their income.

Claims can be made for up to 4 years after the end of the tax year to which they relate, so currently you can get back to 2014/15.
